Can I take the UK theory test in my language?
No — the test is in English or Welsh only.
Foreign-language voiceovers and interpreters were withdrawn in 2014. Whatever your first language, the questions on screen on the day will be in English, and so will the answers you choose between.
What you can ask for
You cannot change the language, but DVSA does provide help if you find reading difficult or you are deaf. You arrange this when you book.
- ✓ An English voiceover through headphones, which you can replay as many times as you need.
- ✓ Extra time for the multiple-choice part, if you send proof of a reading difficulty.
- ✓ A member of staff to read the questions out and record your answers.
- ✓ A member of staff to reword a question to make it easier to understand.
- ✓ British Sign Language: a BSL video beside the questions, or a BSL interpreter at no extra charge.
What about Welsh?
Welsh is the one alternative. You can sit the whole test in Welsh, including the voiceover, and you choose it when you book.
So how do people pass when English is their second language?
By making the English wording familiar before test day rather than translating it on the day. Work through the revision questions with a translation shown right underneath each one: you learn the rule in the language you think in, and you learn the English sentence the examiner will actually put on the screen. That is what this site is for, and it is free.
