Hazard awareness

What this topic tests

Hazard awareness asks you to spot the thing that is about to become a problem, not the thing that already is one. The right answer is usually the earliest action — slowing down while you still have room — rather than the most dramatic one.

  • A developing hazard is something that will make you change speed or direction. A parked car doing nothing is not one; the same car indicating is.
  • Fitness to drive: tiredness, alcohol, prescribed medicine and illness are all treated the same way — do not drive.
  • Signs and markings that warn rather than order, and what they tell you is coming.
  • Other people's mistakes. The answer is almost always to stay calm and leave room, not to react.

The mark people lose: Reaching for the strongest action. Braking sharply, sounding the horn or flashing your lights are rarely right; slowing early and leaving room almost always is.
