What category of licence is required to drive an articulated bus?

Why this is the answer

A full category D licence entitles you to drive all buses and coaches, including the articulated type. A full category D licence on its own does not cover you to drive buses or coaches drawing detachable trailers of more than 750 kg; for this you'll need a DE licence.

Why the other answers don't fit

B
DE — DE adds a trailer, and an articulated bus is one vehicle.
C
D1 — D1 covers minibuses.
D
D1E — D1E is a minibus with a trailer.

Where this question comes from

The question, its options and the explanation are reproduced word for word from the DVSA revision question bank under licence. The licence requires them to appear unaltered, so we cannot reword them and neither can anyone else — that is why you will meet the same wording on other sites. Everything else on this page is written by Theory Hub: the explanation of why each wrong answer is wrong, the topic guide and the revision notes.
