You're approaching a junction where the traffic lights are not working. What should you do when a police officer gives this signal?
- A Turn left only
- B Turn right only
- C Stop level with the officer's arm
- D Stop at the stop line
Why this is the answer
If a police officer or traffic warden directing traffic signals you to stop, you must obey them. They'll use the arm signals shown in The Highway Code. If they're controlling traffic where traffic lights have failed, react to their signal as though it had been given by the traffic lights.
Why the other answers don't fit
- A
- Turn left only — The signal is to stop, not to send you in a particular direction.
- B
- Turn right only — Nor is it a right-turn instruction.
- C
- Stop level with the officer's arm — Stopping level with the officer takes you past the stop line and into the junction.
