Motorcycle loading

What this topic tests

Luggage, pillion passengers, sidecars and trailers. The theme is that everything you add changes the handling, and most of it needs something adjusted before you set off.

  • A heavy top box raises the centre of gravity and reduces stability — keep it for light items.
  • Carrying a load or a pillion may mean adjusting tyre pressures and the headlight aim.
  • A pillion passenger leans with the rider; a child may ride only if they can reach the handholds and footrests.
  • A sidecar needs a suitable machine, a different technique, and it lengthens the stopping distance.
  • A motorcycle trailer may be no more than 1 metre wide, and you need a full licence to tow one.

The mark people lose: Forgetting the adjustments. The question is often not whether you may carry the load, but what you must change before you do.
