Theory Hub UK Theory Test

What should a driving test candidate do if their inertia-reel seat belt has temporarily locked and they cannot put it on at the start of their test?

Why this is the answer

Exemptions are provided in the regulations. If an inertia-reel seat belt has temporarily locked because the vehicle is parked on a gradient, the driver may move the vehicle. As soon as the mechanism has unlocked and released itself, the driver should stop and apply the belt.

Why the other answers don't fit

A
Carry on with the test without a seat belt — Driving without a belt is an offence and would end the test anyway.
B
Ask the examiner to postpone the test and seek a further appointment — A locked inertia reel releases in moments; postponing is a large response to a small delay.
D
Fit the seat belt only if the examiner asks you to perform an emergency stop — The belt is worn for the whole test, not only for one exercise.
