Theory Hub UK Theory Test

What must a learner driver have before they drive on the road for the first time?

Why this is the answer

Before taking a learner driver out for their first driving lesson, an approved driving instructor (ADI) or accompanying driver should first check the learner's • eyesight meets the legal requirements • driving licence is valid.

Why the other answers don't fit

A
A driving licence without any penalty points — Points are irrelevant; a learner holds a provisional licence, not a full one.
B
A professional driving instructor with them — A supervising driver need not be a professional instructor.
D
A valid medical assessment — No medical assessment is required for an ordinary car licence.

Where this question comes from

The question, its options and the explanation are reproduced word for word from the DVSA revision question bank under licence. The licence requires them to appear unaltered, so we cannot reword them and neither can anyone else — that is why you will meet the same wording on other sites. Everything else on this page is written by Theory Hub: the explanation of why each wrong answer is wrong, the topic guide and the revision notes.
