You’re performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a casualty. Someone stops to help. What should you get them to do?
- A Fetch a blanket
- B Fetch a first aid kit
- C Fetch a defibrillator
- D Fetch a privacy screen
Why this is the answer
A defibrillator (AED) could improve the casualty’s chances of survival. Do not stop CPR to fetch an AED, but if there’s someone else with you, you can send them to get one. The 999 operator will direct you to the nearest AED, if you need to use one.
Why the other answers don't fit
- A
- Fetch a blanket — Warmth matters later. It does nothing at all while the heart is stopped.
- B
- Fetch a first aid kit — A first aid kit holds nothing that restarts a heart.
- D
- Fetch a privacy screen — Dignity is not the priority in the minutes that decide whether they live.
