Safety and your motorcycle

What this topic tests

Keeping the machine roadworthy, and the clothing that counts as part of it. A motorcycle has fewer parts than a car and each one matters more: a slack chain or a worn shock absorber changes how the bike behaves rather than merely wearing out.

  • A loose or worn drive chain can lock the rear wheel.
  • Check wheel alignment after refitting the rear wheel or adjusting the chain.
  • Minimum tread for a motorcycle over 50 cc is 1 mm.
  • A helmet that is not fastened correctly is an illegal helmet.
  • Protective clothing in hot weather too — it is protection, not warmth.

The mark people lose: Carrying the car tread figure across. For a motorcycle over 50 cc the legal minimum is 1 mm, not 1.6 mm.
