Theory Hub UK Theory Test

You're parking your manual transmission car facing uphill with a kerb on your left. You apply the parking brake. What else should you do for added security?

Why this is the answer

If the parking brake fails, using first gear will help to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards. By turning the front wheels to the right, they'll travel the shortest distance before running against the kerb. This will reduce the potential for the vehicle to move any further.

Why the other answers don't fit

A
Leave the front wheels turned to the left, with the vehicle in first gear — Facing uphill, wheels turned left would let the car roll into the road.
B
Leave the front wheels turned to the left, with the vehicle in reverse gear — Reverse gear is for facing downhill, and the wheels are still the wrong way.
D
Leave the front wheels turned to the right, with the vehicle in reverse gear — The wheels are right and the gear is wrong; facing uphill you leave it in first.
