What should you do if your vehicle gets a puncture while you're driving on a motorway?
- A Use the motorway telephone and call for assistance
- B Change the wheel yourself if you have a hi-vis jacket
- C Use the motorway telephone and then try to change the wheel
- D Drive along the hard shoulder to reach the next service area
Why this is the answer
Any vehicle stopped on the hard shoulder of a motorway is at risk from passing traffic. For this reason, do not attempt to make repairs to your vehicle while it's on the hard shoulder. Make your way to the nearest emergency telephone to call for assistance.
Why the other answers don't fit
- B
- Change the wheel yourself if you have a hi-vis jacket — A jacket does not protect you from traffic while you kneel beside a live carriageway.
- C
- Use the motorway telephone and then try to change the wheel — Calling and then changing it anyway puts you in the same danger.
- D
- Drive along the hard shoulder to reach the next service area — Driving on a flat destroys the wheel and may take the vehicle out of control.
