What should you do if you want to overtake a tractor but are not sure that it's safe?
- A Follow another vehicle as it overtakes the tractor
- B Sound your horn to make the tractor driver pull over
- C Speed past, flashing your lights at oncoming traffic
- D Stay behind it if you're in any doubt
Why this is the answer
Following a tractor can be frustrating, but never overtake if you’re unsure whether it’s safe. Ask yourself: 'Can I see far enough down the road to be sure that I can complete the manoeuvre safely?' It's better to be delayed for a minute or 2 than to take a chance that may cause a collision.
Why the other answers don't fit
- A
- Follow another vehicle as it overtakes the tractor — Their view is not your view, and you would be committed before you could see past them.
- B
- Sound your horn to make the tractor driver pull over — The horn is a warning that you are there. It is not an instruction to anybody.
- C
- Speed past, flashing your lights at oncoming traffic — Flashing does not create priority, and the oncoming traffic has nowhere to go.
