What does this symbol on a direction sign indicate?

Why this is the answer

Where it's necessary to temporarily close a motorway or other main road, signs will be displayed advising drivers to follow a particular symbol in order to rejoin their route. These symbols are often permanently displayed on direction signs.

Why the other answers don't fit

A
Direction to a campsite — A campsite is shown by a tent symbol on a brown panel.
B
Route for high vehicles only — No symbol reserves a route for tall vehicles.
D
Direction to a tourist attraction — Tourist attractions are signed in brown with their own symbols.
