Theory Hub UK Theory Test

What does this sign mean?

Why this is the answer

Vehicles over the weight shown on the sign may not use the bridge ahead. You must know the weight of your vehicle, including any load. With this knowledge you should plan your route in advance, so that you do not come to a bridge you cannot cross. That way, you'll avoid delays and save time and fuel.

Why the other answers don't fit

A
You're allowed to carry on, but only with a police escort — No escort makes an overweight vehicle safe on a weak bridge.
B
You should continue slowly if your weight is above the limit — Going slowly does not reduce the weight on the structure.
C
Do not cross unless the bridge is clear of other vehicles — Whether other vehicles are on it is not what the limit is about.

Where this question comes from

The question, its options and the explanation are reproduced word for word from the DVSA revision question bank under licence. The licence requires them to appear unaltered, so we cannot reword them and neither can anyone else — that is why you will meet the same wording on other sites. Everything else on this page is written by Theory Hub: the explanation of why each wrong answer is wrong, the topic guide and the revision notes.
