What this topic tests
How the car behaves, and which lights to use when. The lighting questions are the ones most often lost, and they hinge on one distinction: fog lights are for fog, and dipped headlights are for everything else.
- Fog lights only below 100 metres of visibility, and off again the moment it clears.
- Rear fog lights are as bright as brake lights, which is why leaving them on is dangerous rather than just annoying.
- Going downhill: a lower gear for engine braking, and the brakes used carefully on top of it.
- Parking downhill, turn the wheels towards the kerb so they act as a chock.
- Traffic calming: keep the speed down for the whole stretch, not just at the humps.
The mark people lose: Using full beam because it is dark. If there is traffic ahead of you or coming towards you, full beam is the wrong answer however black the road is.
