Theory Hub UK Theory Test

You're driving at the speed limit in the left-hand lane of a motorway. What should you do if you see lorries merging from a slip road ahead?

Why this is the answer

Only change lanes if doing so will not inconvenience another road user. Merging drivers have a responsibility to give way, if necessary, and not force their way onto the main carriageway. Planning ahead will make sure you're prepared to deal with these situations.

Why the other answers don't fit

A
Try to accelerate past them — Accelerating past a line of merging lorries leaves you nowhere if one moves out.
C
Brake heavily and let them merge — Heavy braking risks being hit from behind.
D
Expect them to stop and let you pass — Merging traffic has nowhere to stop, and expecting it to is dangerous.
