Theory Hub UK Theory Test

Your vehicle breaks down on a motorway. What should you do if you cannot get it fully onto the hard shoulder?

Why this is the answer

Standing on or near the edge of the carriageway is very dangerous. Your priority is to alert the emergency services by using an emergency roadside telephone. This connects to an operator, who'll get help out to you as soon as possible. In most cases, this is preferable to using a mobile phone, as it will show the operator your precise location.

Why the other answers don't fit

A
Stand at the edge of the carriageway to warn others — Standing at the edge of a live carriageway puts you in the path of the traffic.
B
Place a warning triangle in the lane behind your vehicle — Warning triangles are never used on a motorway.
C
Wear a bright jacket and stand in the lane behind your vehicle — A bright jacket does not stop a lorry, and standing in a live lane is fatal.
