Which sign means that the national speed limit applies?

Why this is the answer

You should know the speed limit for the road on which you're travelling and for your vehicle. The different speed limits are shown in The Highway Code.

Why the other answers don't fit

A
— The white bar on red is no entry. It stops you going in at all, whatever speed you were planning.
B
— An empty red ring keeps all vehicles off that road. A limit tells you how fast, not whether you may go.
C
— The blue circle with a red X is the clearway sign: no stopping. It sets no speed at all.
